This spring, the Pathways to Purpose program has hosted several events centered around college & career planning.

If we haven’t had the pleasure of meeting before, allow me to introduce myself. I’m Adam Johnson, the Pathways to Purpose Manager with Elevate Indy. In a desire to share with you all of the incredible things we are doing with the program, my amazing team and I are planning on curating periodic blog posts sharing with you all of the great things we are doing; below you will find the first of these.

Best,

Resume & Mock Interview Workshops

We kicked off the month of April with a Resume Workshop with our community collaborator, Lori Rozgonyi with Equitable Advisors. During the workshop, students learned about proper formatting and how to tailor a resume to fit their specific interests. A total of 11 students attended the workshop and walked away with a polished resume, along with several tips to strengthen their resume writing skills.

This activity prepared our students for a Mock Interview Workshop with EmployIndy. Community volunteers conducted 1:1 mock interviews with Elevate students. At the end of each interview, the interviewee provided feedback on level of comfort, ability to answer questions with confidence, and the quality of the resumes the students had created in the Resume Workshop.

“A Day in the Life of a First Responder”

We wrapped up our April events earlier this week with “A Day in the Life of a First Responder,” which included the Indianapolis Fire DepartmentCarmel & Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Departments, Eli Lilly & Co. Fire-Rescue Department, 911 Dispatch, two nurses and a doctor. The event kicked off with a Q&A discussion panel centered around the topic of working in the midst of a pandemic and serving their communities during the heightened civil unrest and social injustice experienced over the past year.

We then moved into breakout sessions where students could personally engage with panelists, ask additional questions about their respective fields, and watch hands-on demonstrations, including how firefighters get dressed in 90 seconds prior to heading out to respond to a call. Elevate student Kiya J. said, “It was a great experience because I got to ask the doctor and nurses so many questions that I really needed to know about healthcare and how to get where I need to be.” Additionally, Elevate student Ashley P. stated, “It was very helpful, interesting and informative.”
